If you love high fives, puns, and karaoke as much as we do then you'll love Becky Simpson! She's the creator and mastermind behind Chipper Things, and the illustrator and author behind The Roommate Book and I'd Rather Be Short. She just wrapped up a year being one of the first people to be invited to the Adobe Creative Residency. In short, she's super cool and we're her number one fans!
We sat down to ask her a few questions & find out about her favorite things!
How old were you when you started illustrating? I've been drawlin' since I can remember. I do have a lot of art-centered memories from kindergarten (missing finger paint day was devastating).
Who is your favorite illustrator? Eric Carle and Aubrey Beardsley. Interesting couple, I know.
What's your favorite color? Mint
What's your favorite Chipper Things product? The Girls Gone Mild pins or the "Should I Wear Pants Today?" print.
What did you want to be when you grew up? It was usually something pretty artsy—anything from "movie star" (ha!), to writing and illustrating children's books (this came about in kindergarten after my teacher read us The Very Hungry Caterpillar), to interior or fashion designer.
What's your #1 occupational hazard? Myself. You think I'm joking but I'm not.
What's your proudest illustration moment? When I acquired my first book deal! Ironically, I can never spell "acquired" right on the first try.
Who should we be following on Instagram? Oh the usual, @moultonatx, @byronandblue and the hilar, @jengotch
What's your favorite breakfast food? Breakfast tacos! Aren't I special?
What's your favorite book? Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger.
What's on your summer bucket list? Visit all of the major Austin swimming holes (blue Hole, McKinney Falls, Jacob's Well, etc.)
What's your favorite tattoo you have? I only have two, but I'm going to get a couple more soon. I got a '319' (my old Iowa area code) on the back of my heel with my friend Hannah on a whim. It's a fun place for a silly tattoo!
